This Is What Fancy Feels Like
Thursday, July 29, 2010

So, this is how fancy feels.

I feel like I've slipped on a new party dress and it's pinkalicous and it graces my curves perfectly and it makes me look skinny and it highlights my eyes and it has just a glimmer of a sparkle to it.

And yes. It is official. I am in love.

I am the epitome of the line, "She may be weary. Young girls do get weary, wearing that same ole' shabby dress." Even though I am technically not young, that line applies to both my real life and here on my blog.

And if you've never seen Ducky from Pretty In Pink doing his impression of this fine Otis Redding song, you must, must, must go here. I mean it. Go. It's only a little over a minute and it is just one of the best moments in a John Hughes film. It is Jon Cryer at his finest. And when I sit there watching him own that moment on the big screen, I think, "What happened?" You know. To him.

If I were Jon Cryer, I would come home every day from this terrible detour in my career where I spend my days playing second string to Charlie Sheen's deadpan, hatchet of an acting job and I would turn on this video and watch my own brilliance and drown my sorrows in Elf fudge cookies and Krispy Kreme doughtnuts and deep dish pizza and vodka and rue the day I met Mr. "Crack and Hookers Complete Me" and took the toilet plunge into the world of sitcoms.

But that's just me.

Anyway, back to me. More specifically my lovely new blog design.

This look comes compliments of Teresa at Splendid Sparrow

I was looking for clean. I was looking for pretty. I was looking for that certain swish a cocktail dress makes when it just fits to perfection. And when I found Teresa, I knew she would make me lovely.

I have a tendency to describe what I want in a rather figurative, airy way with talk of the swishiness of my blog and the sparkle and the pink instead of the, you know, HTML and fonts and douching of configurations or whatever it is those technological people do.

I wrote to Teresa speaking of my sparkles and swish and she listened to my airy words and sent me back a screenshot, (are you impressed I know that term?) and said,

"Something like this?"

And I was all, "Seriously? Yes. Exactly that!"

There was no back and forth, well maybe just a teensy-tiny bit, but she got the main gist of me down on the very first try.

This is my 3rd wardrobe change since I started my blog and I kind of correlate it to my third child. With each new design, I became less neurotic and nervous and much more slackerish relaxed. I left it all in Teresa's Splendid Sparrow's very capable hands. It was the easiest blog design I've ever done. Truly. Teresa made the transition seamless and I am overjoyed at my brand new blog dress.

So, thank you Teresa at Splendid Sparrow. And if any of you are looking for a new chic design with someone who understands when you speak of glitter in the air, go knock on Teresa's door. She gets it.

Oh, and I've got just a little housework I need to speak of today. First of all, my Blogger, you know the tech geeks that live in my computer who are too busy beer ponging all day than Getting. Things. Right. are jacking with me entirely too much lately.

Their newest little party trick is sending all my comments to the junk pile. And that will not do because you, my darling, darling readers and friends are not junk and I will not let anyone put you there. I'm trying to figure how to get you non-junked, but in the meantime, I might overlook a comment or two.

Which brings me to my next little bit of housework:

I reply to every single person who comments on my blog. If you take the time to make a comment. I'm going to take the time to be grateful to you. Now, having said that, it's oftentimes hard to leave you lovely chickies a reply. And there are a few of you, I worry, don't know I am grateful for your words.

Specifically, Tiffaney. Tiffaney, if you're out there. Thank you for reading. Thank you for your comments. Tiffaney has a blog but I can't find a place to comment anywhere on her blog. Maybe it's just me because I truly am that girl in the store who says to the bagboy, "Excuse me. Can you tell me where you keep the mustard around these parts." And the bagboy looks at me warily as he points right in front of my face and I'm all, "Ohhhh, Okay. I forgot to look, you know, right in front of my face."

So, that could be how it is on Tiffaney's blog, but this is me, Tiffaney saying, "Thank you! And I love your blog!"

There are a few others who either have private blogs or for whatever reason, my Mac won't let me access their page and so I have no way of replying to them, especially since they have their no reply turned on, on their profile page.

Which brings me to my next point. There are a lot of us bloggers out there who like to reply back with an email. Emails are great because you can say things you might not want anyone to hear except that person, like, "Hey, I noticed your zipper was down, might want to check it." or something to that point. But mainly because it is the most efficient way to reply to readers.

If you go into your Blogger profile, there's a little spot where you can supply an email. If you turn that no reply off on your profile, you'll be amazed at how many bloggers will respond to your comment. It's also a great way to build a friendship outside of a blog.

So, if you still decide no reply is the way you want to go and you don't have a blog I can access or I can't find the comment area on your blog because I'm blonde, check my comments, because I will comment back to you there. Whew. Now, you see why my laundry never gets done.

So, one more bit of housework and I'm done, because my Hubby's tapping his foot and it's dinner time and you know, the restaurants are going, "Where are the Mannix's tonight?"

My wonderful designer put some cute icons there on the top of my blog and if you notice there is a Twitter button and NO I'm not twittering or whatever it is you people do . . .  yet. But I have a feeling the day is coming. You people and your pressure and little things like trying to get a book published are all factors in inching me closer to that day. But, I'll tell you when that day comes, so no Twitter for now.

Ok, that's it. I feel tidier now. Don't you?

Today's Definite Download: Jason Mraz's "Details In The Fabric." I haven't talked about Jason yet which is a shame, because I have been a fan of his long, long before the mainstream world of music knew him. His lyrics shine, his music is just lush and gorgeous. I'm a big fan of this guy. Do yourself a favor and listen to all of his music, not just his top hits. He gives music a righteous name.

For Teresa and my new blog and for all the things to come and for this trail I am walking that is oftentimes rough and rugged but always exhilarating. This song inspires me.

And most of all, for someone who needs some healing right now. For my friend Hulk, hang in there Big Guy. The days will grow brighter. Know that you are loved.

Calm down
Deep breaths
And get yourself dressed
Instead of running around
And pulling all your threads
And breaking yourself up

If it's a broken part, replace it
If it's a broken arm, then brace it
If it's a broken heart, then face it

And hold your own
Know your name
And go your own way

Hang on
Help is on the way
And stay strong
I'm doing everything

Hold your own
Know your name
And go your own way

And everything
Everything, it will be fine
Everything

I LOVE IT!!

I love, love, love the new look. It's awesome, and it's YOU. I may have to do this...I am bored with my blog look and I tried to change it with blogger and now I hate it. And I can't figure out how to change it back. Grrr.

Love. Love. Love. Beautiful, and pink. Love. Love. Love it.

Wow, now that I came out of my reader your first few paragraphs makes so much more sense to me! It's looking all classy and shiny and sleek now.

Thanks for the clip. Actually forgot that Annie Potts was even in it. Duckie was such fun. And how can 2.5 men not make you laugh? The mother is the best.

Oh, it is so pretty! I liked your first blog "look" the second was was nice. Not bad, but did not blow me away, but this one now is just too cute. I have always loved the name of your blog, it makes me giggle on the inside because it is just so true and dramatic and I love it so much. Beautiful post as always. I so enjoy your writing and cannot wait to read an entire book.

OOOh, loving the new look. I pretty much loved this whole post, and to specifically go through it all to tell you how much I loved it, would essentially be re-writing it.

And uh, check your email. LOL

Amen and hallelujah, sister! I LOVE to reply to all the comments, even the one word ones like "Wow!" and "Damn" and "Suh-weet!" but I HATE it when that no-reply@blogger.com comes to party. No fun at all.

And your new frock is so lovely. It makes me want one of my own, but in a slightly (okay, a lot) less pink and sparkly way. Maybe crumbling and Tuscan.

You are such an inspiration. Thanks for letting me come and party with you.

Enjoy the day!
Erin

P.S. Just say no to Twitter! I can feel it's evil gravitational pull myself, but figuring that I can't seem to access my Facebook but twice a month, it probably isn't the best use of my otherwise limited time.

LOVING your new look, girlie! Pink looks good on you!

You're welcome. And don't worry about replying every time to me every time, unless you find what I say very clever. Leaving a comment on my blog is thanks enough.

BTW, I don't know if I can get used to these new digs. Very, uh, girly.

I'm borrowing dh's laptop to get on blogs- I showed up here and was thinking WHEN did you change your blog?

Love it!!!!

The new duds suit you, although I miss the tide box a little. Thanks for posting that about the email. I posted it on my blog a while back, but some people either didn't read it or didn't get it. It's so much easier when you can respond on email!
I loved the John Cryer doing Otis Redding video! It was wonderful. He did just get an emmy for his role on Two and a Half Men, and I imagine the money is excellent.

Oh Joann! Your new look is pink puffy sparkly heart with sequins, fantastic.

And I loved the Jon Cryer video you included in your post today. Brought back good '80s memories.

I am proud to be one of your blog followers. (:

There is a blog I read that also leaves no place to comment. Sadly, it is a really good blog and I would like to leave sweet little messages. I just wanted you to know that you are not crazy. And if perhaps we are both wrong, then at least you're not alone. Kisses.

LOVE the new look! It's pink! It's sparkly! Yes! But it appears you're wearing flip-flops. I was hoping for stilettos, but that's just me ;)

This is lovely!

There must be something in the air because I've seen several places with new designs. I've even freshened up my stuffy place.

Re: Otis Ray Redding, Jr. - one of my FAV scenes in my FAV movie (Bull Durham) is when Crash and Meat are on the bus and Crash lashes into Meat for not knowing the WORDS to that song. Love that movie.

At first I thought something was wrong...this isn't the right blog....something must be connecting incorrectly....but then as soon as I saw the writing and the John Cryer link, I knew I was home.
Congrats! The site looks awesome!!!

Love the new digs! Looks great! I've got something new coming soon and can't wait! It's like remodeling without the noise, dust and plumbers crack!
I hope the lady doing mine will explain how to get emails. I'm wordpress and it's so confusing. And when I reply on my blog, I don't think anyone gets it. I'm the opposite of techy!
Impressive use of "screenshot" though!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the new look!! I'll be adding your button to my blog!

(Speaking of Blogger hating us - this is my 2nd attempt to leave a comment!)

Just testing because everyone is saying they can't leave a comment. STOP BEER PONGING BLOGGER AND GET YOUR GEEK ASSES TO WORK!

That should do the trick.

wow... this is so purrty. just like a girly thing, something I don't see around these parts.

this color is called pink, right?

love it,joann.! i'll send tiffany over.

LOVE the new blog! It looks sparkly and vivacious, just like you, or at least the sense I get of you from reading your stuff. I really like the song lyrics as well, they really resonate with me right now. I'll have to download that song later.
Thank you for your comments on my blog, the encouragement means more than you may know.

1) The new layout is GREAT!

2) I've also been thinking of posting on my blog for people to turn off the no-reply and for them to attach their email address. I want to talk to them!

3) I hate twitter. Or maybe all my friends are just really, really boring. A while ago I started twittering whenever I pooped. You'd be surprised how boring that gets, and fast. However, it has started a joke with my friends where if one of us says we are twittering, it's code for "poop". Sorry to bring that subject on your blog.

I love this post. It made me smile! Anyone who can say the word Pinkalicious, cite the infamous and classic Ducky-sings-Otis-in-the-record-shop-in-Pretty-in-Pink scene, AND call out Charlie Sheen as "Mr. Crack and Hookers Complete Me," well, you get my vote for the best blog post of the day. :) And BTW, your blog looks Fab-U-lous!

Anonymous said...

I LOVE it! A lot! A lot a lot! :)

What was for dinner? And maybe, just maybe, I'll check this blog designer out!

Pat said...

I like the new look. I even like the sound of ice cubes clinking in a glass in the background. Wait. That's not coming from YOUR blog? Oh. Maybe that's from my HOUSE. Hee-hee

As Rod Steward sings, "You wear it well.."

(Am I showing my age by selecting Rod Steward?" Damn!

liz said...

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY want you to Tweet! But if you do, you may kinda get sucked in, and there will be a lot more husband foot tapping to be had.

And I'm grabbing your new button.

For whatever reason, your former, flashing button never worked on my blog.

Beautiful blog! You know how much I love pink.

Also, now I have learned something. It has always bugged me that I can't find a way to write back to commenters. I am going to go check that "no reply" status on my own account.

Thanks, pretty (and clever) girl!!

Thanks for reminding people that no reply means a sad face for many of us!

My phone is not showing me your new design (its very tempermental), but I love how you describe it and I can't wait to get to my computer to see if it looks like I think it will.

Also, I'm am very relieved that I'm not the only person who sometimes can't find the comment place (I also sometimes can't find the follow place). And I wholeheartedly agree with email replies being awesome.

Great post.

Tiffaney said...

Joann!! Darling!!

If in fact I am the Tiffaney (with an 'e') in question, your kind shout out was overwhelmingly flattering but entirely unnecessary. I don't have a blog (ah! so that's what's up!) and unfortunately the only thing I'm consistent at, is being inconsistent-- specifically when it comes to commenting, especially the past few weeks with some minor changes to my routine. I adore you to pieces, and eagerly await and read every single post. I just wish we lived in the same region (I'm in CA) so I could take you out for a big glass of wine/vodka/pick your poison. I love living vicariously through your zany family adventures, as your hubby and girls are true gems.
xoxo

P.S. GORG web design!

I do appreciate when you stop by the blog. I know it takes a lot of time to visit everybody every day. You're a gem!

Hey you. It looks great as great can be but I'm old. I take change hard, so I'm going to have to adjust:-) It really does look great, though. Hope dinner was great.

Hi There...love your new look...maybe it is time I looked for one...no scrap that idea...I am SO technically challenged.

Would love to hear from you.
Love your blog.

Sandra, Thank you so much for your constant, constant support. And I know, I love this one so very much. I think we might just be in love forever.

Paula-Thank you. I love the prettiness of it. I'll see you over at the Pie.

Tiffaney, Tiffaney, Tiffaney-It IS you! I'm confused because your profile has a blog link to it and when I go there, it's a beautiful design blog. So, not yours? Anyway, as said in above post, thank you for all your wondrous comments.

Hulk here...thanks for the kind words. You are a good Internet friend. I am feeling better and I am sure I will be fine. And thanks for the dedication.

It is support like this that has kept me from climbing naked into a bell tower with a high-powered rifle... :)

oh my gosh, at the risk of revealing my true fickle and forgetful nature, you are SO right, I did start a blog a while back that I abandoned in its infancy and frankly forgot all about. Heh. Yeah. That's me. *sheepish grin* geesh. You're a doll for reminding me. Maybe this is divine intervention and I should give it another shot. You may be just the nudge I needed. :)

Hmmm. I may have to rethink the comment thingity too. And I have no idea if there's an email link on my page or not ... never thought about people being able to contact me through that, as I never honestly thought about anyone reading it except friends and family.
Decisions, decisions.

As I had only recently discovered your blog, I hadn't had time to become accustomed to its previous clothes, but I do like the nice clean current layout. And what great fun to see Jon Cryer stealing the movie in that clip. He was my fave. Molly Ringwald was a clueless drip for passing him up in that. :)
