So This Is What Blog Angels Do
Tuesday, December 28, 2010

My hubby and I are rather warped in our humor.

Oftentimes, for various reasons, we've used the phrase, "Welcome to The Shit Show!"

So, it was essential that I purchased this glass when I stumbled upon it recently.

It describes a few elements of my life right now, to a big, honkin' CAPITAL T.

Except for my blog. My beautiful, beautiful blog is back, thanks to an angel who came to me on Christmas.

So, here's the dealio:

I got ripped off, conned, screwed, reamed, bamboozled. Whatever you prefer to call it, I got it big time.

Teresa Brazell of Splendid Sparrow seemed like a dream to work with.

At the time.

But then, I recommended her to a dear friend of mine, Noelle of Because Nice Matters.

Noelle gave Teresa a big chunk of money for a down payment to design her blog.

She never heard from Teresa again.

I felt terrible, simply terrible that a dear friend of mine had been wronged and it was the direct result of me pointing lovely Noelle towards a scammer.

And then I woke up on Christmas Eve to my blog in complete disarray with my images all gone and in their place was this ugly ass Photobucket warning splayed across my screen. It was a terrible Christmas present.

I went to Splendid Sparrow's website. It had disappeared. (Update, per another one of Teresa's victims, I have learned that she is up and running, again. Please, let everyone and anyone know, she is complete scam.)

I tried emailing Teresa Brazell. I got silence.

I googled other Blogger blogs Teresa Brazell had designed. They were as jacked up as mine. All of their images had also been yanked by Photobucket. I contacted some of those bloggers. They told me they'd been trying to get ahold of Teresa Brazell for months.

I went through my old correspondences with Teresa Brazell and there it was—the email where she said she would be sending me copies of my images shortly.

Shortly never came around.

And in the excitement of my new blog unveiling, I overlooked that one really crucial detail.

And yes, I am kicking myself for being so utterly stupid.

And worse than losing all of my images, was the devastating feeling that a bad person had found their way to my corner of the world.

I am Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. I am always flabbergasted when I discover that people are not inherently good. I mean every time Snoop Dogg gets arrested, I'm all, "No! Not the Dogg! No!"

Because I love Snoop. And actually, he is inherently good. He just likes his weed a little too openly.

Teresa Brazell of Splendid Sparrow, on the other hand, is not good nor is she splendid.

And I know that sometimes mistakes are made and I know sometimes people may find themselves in a bind they can't get out of. But mistakes are one thing, disappearing with good people's money is just criminal.

But enough of her, she does not deserve any more time or attention.

Instead I'd like to focus on the good and the good came to me in the form of a blog friend. Tina of Tinalicious and Art Chick Studio sent me an email on Christmas. When she saw the mess that was my blog, she went and hunted down cached versions of my missing images. She found all of them and she sent them to me in a zip file.

Now don't ask me what any of that means. I have no idea.

All I know is, this blog friend, this angel, took the time to do this incredible thing for me. And when I opened her file, there were all the bits and pieces of my blog. I just wanted to cry, knowing someone would do such a kind thing for me.

In the meantime, I had no idea how to take those bits and pieces and put Humpty Dumpty back together again. And there were still presents to be wrapped, Christmas Eve festivities, a Christmas to be had and a Christmas celebration at my house with eleventy hundred people. I did not have time to cry, at least for too long nor did I have time to become utterly frustrated as I ineptly tried to put my jigsaw blog back into place.

But along with all of my images, Tina had offered me the gift of her help. So after I valiantly tried and cried and cried some more, I let Tina know that her help would be my greatest Christmas present.

Tina said she needed to work on a few things of her own and that she would help me out as soon as she was done, probably a few days from now.

So, I tried not to think about my blog. I couldn't stand to even look at it. I just ignored the whole blog world, this little Internet world that means so much to me. I went to the movies last night and watched an amazing movie, (more about that in a later post) and when I came home there was this note from Tina, telling me I was no longer broken.

And I ran over to my blog and there, there was my pretty pinkalicious blog all restored by the lovely, lovely Tinalicious who gets my vote for Angel Of The Year.

She is also getting a little something else from me from the UPS man in a few days.

And I just reread that last part and no, I'm not sending a UPS stripper to Tina.

Anyway, did you hear that?

That was my enormous gust of a sigh, an exclamation of relief.

Thank you, Tina.

Your utter kindness makes me feel justified in my Rebecca of Sunnybrook ways. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. And angels. And people whose kind hearts are a fortress from those who choose to harm and commit wrongdoing to others.

I will be forever grateful. I hope everyone has a Tina in their life when they need one the most.

You are my hero, Tina.

And as for the rest of the Shit Show: My mother-in-law and father-in-law are still with us, waiting for the good doctors to meet and decide when her biopsy will take place.

And so, I'll just say this. I don't have a lot of extra time. And I miss my time. Like, a lot.

My wonderful Hubby has decided that I need my time back. Probably because he subscribes to the phrase, "Happy Wife. Happy Life" He also tells my children on a regular basis, "If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy".  He has tried to establish some ground rules in our house about giving me time to write and blog and whatnot, but . . .

Let's just say, it hasn't been very successful. So, he's developed a plan for me that entails me holing myself up in the bedroom for a few hours a day with specific instructions from him that I am not to be disturbed.

And if that doesn't work, I'll be headed to Starbucks every day.

In the meantime, please bear with me as I find my way, slowly but surely, back to all of you.

Today, I've actually found some peace and quiet. My own mother had a small surgical procedure this morning and I'm here at her house while she sleeps off the grogginess of anesthesia.

It's been one big party around here, lately.

I know this downward spiral 2010 has taken will just turn into a trajectory of awesomeness when that big ball drops at midnight, ringing in 2011.

And I promise you, this is the last of the glumness. I'll be back to regular fun in my next posts. My blog just might be dripping with coffee stains and words strung together from the fierce rush of the caffeine, but I'm back, Baby. The Shit Show is getting kicked to the curb. I can't tolerate the downers for too long.

It's time to have fun, again. And that's exactly what I intend to do.

UPDATE! NEWSFLASH! READ ALL ABOUT IT!: As I sat here finishing up this post, I was inundated with a bevy of emails from various folks telling me that I made the list of Kludgy Mom's Top 50 Chick Bloggers of 2010

I immediately scurried on over to Kludgy Mom and the fabulous Gigi. I was shocked and ready to faint when I saw my little blog at number one!

Shut. The. Front. Door.

This is just awesome. She also has me categorized as one of the funniest damn bloggers of 2010.

If you're new here, I promise you, I'm usually not so Charlie Brown teacher like with my Mwa, Mwa, Mwa, Mwa, Mwa, Mwa, Mwa. But usually, I'm also not getting ripped off and awash in the problems of all the senior citizens in my life.

Come back again, new folks. I'll bring the funny with me, next time.

Today's Definite Download: I am actually working on my new computer and I haven't shifted over my iTunes Library yet. So with no reference, I just started thinking about songs and the Foo Fighters, "My Hero" popped up into this little brain of mine.

Dave Grohl said he wrote this song because growing up he didn't have any musical or sport heroes, his heroes were the everyday, ordinary people in his life.

And I think he's absolutely right. The true spirit of heroism is in those who live life with grace and goodness every day, not just on the ball field or up on the stage. It is in the strength of those who show the rest of us how to live through their generosity and kindness.

"My Hero" for my friend Tina because she is exactly that.

Too alarming now to talk about
Take your pictures down and shake it out
Truth or consequence, say it aloud
Use that evidence, race it around

There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes
There goes my hero
He's ordinary . . .

Hurray for your angel! I hope things go well with the mama recovering and the m-i-l and her issues. Try and remember to focus on yourself a little bit. You have nothing to give if you don't replenish and refill your own cup once in a while. (Advice from one nurturer caregiver to another)

Love the cup!

Ami said...

So hard to focus on yourself when there are so many other things needing your attention, isn't it?

Glad you got your bloggy back.. but I'm sorry. I don't like Snoop.

Still like you, though.

Sending good thoughts for your mom. and your mother in law. And you and yours.

Shell said...

Oh, my! I'm so glad you got your blog back! How horrible that she would do that. Grrrrr!

SO glad you're back and looking all pink and beautiful again!

I can't believe that woman would scam people. What's going on in her small brain?

Brittney said...

i cant believe someone done that grrr.. thankfully tina fixed it for you that was really nice of her :) Hope the "me" time works out for you.. wish my hubs would do that haha

I'm still in shock learning this . Why? I am so naive I think too.

And when I clicked here and saw all the mess I just thought it was a temporary glitch .. I never would have imagined.

So so glad things will be all up up hill and glory from here on in right?

Eva Gallant said...

So sorry you went through all that; glad there was a Tina to help you. Take care!

twelvedaysold said...

Yay! And I have to second your declaration of making 2011 not-sucky. Our year finally settled down, but that last half was definitely a doozy for us. And I'm sorry that woman took people's money and is hiding out. It's redonk.

Hooray for Deb! Boo to scammers! Yay for your positive attitude. All the best for a tremendous New Year. You deserve it! (And, by gawd, you look pretty in pink!)

it's back and it's beautiful! thank god for angels! that was just so great of her to help like that, I would be lost and crying in a puddle too, I'm not techy at all!
Hope 2011 finds it's way back to a normal routine for you and your family.

Yay!! Tina-Angel rocks! Your blog looks all pretty and feels like home again. That is awesome!

I'm not even going to discuss the awful scammer who did that to you. Yuck!

Congrats on making Gigi's list. You deserve it!

randine said...

I'm glad your blog is back to it's old self! That is just awful what happened. How can people be so mean? I seriously lose sleep if I do something that might have offended someone.
I can't imagine just blatantly ripping someone off. Crazy.

Congrats on your blogging award! You deserve it. You're my favorite blogger!

Anyways, here's hoping that 2011 will be your year!

Hurray for tina -- hurray for you. Welcome back to visual perfection.

Thank God for angels, indeed. I believe in karma. There will always be an angel swooping to the rescue of kindhearted, generous spirits like you, and the crooks and swindlers of the blogosphere will get what they deserve eventually, too.

Thanks for posting about what happened to you to help others avoid being victimized!

Shabbygalsnest said...

Yay your back! Thank God for angels! Tina sounds like one! Can't wait to read more funny posts! Congrats on being awarded #1 funny blog! I could of told ya that! Traci

Cheeseboy said...

#1?! Get out! Well deserved. (I am standing on my couch and applauding you at this moment. My wife has given me one of those "looks".)

Does she have a man list? I wonder where I would rank?

This Teresa Brazell character sounds suspicious. I think we should put poop on her front door and light it on fire. Better yet, lets just throw the poop in her windows. On fire.

I am so glad you are back!!! and I'm loving the look.

I totally was upset for Noelle too. I dislike people so much that do crap like this to others. errrr

Tina said...

Thanks for the high praise, Joann. I was only too happy to help un-jack your blog for you. It's really just returning the gift you give me each time I read your blog...because you always make me smile or laugh, and those are wonderful gifts indeed.

Yay! You're back!

And also? Congratulations!! Woo Hoo!!

Well, I guess Teresa Brassier is on the run from the law right now! I am so happy that your blog is so successful, because you and I are friends, and so I can say, "Hey! That's my friend's blog that is so wonderful and awardwinning! Yes!! And if we ever run into Teresa Brassier, we will smack her right on her nose for messin' with you! Then we'll make a citizen's arrest, because we are friends with Noelle, too! Ha! How's that!

TesoriTrovati said...

Yea for angels! They are around us all the time. I am so glad that you are back to your rip roarin' self, Miss Joann. I took a blog hiatus for a few days so I missed the debacle. But I am breathing a sigh of relief for you. I hope that your senior troubles find a swift resolution. Starbucks is good anytime day or night. I say you invoke that sanity plea anytime you need it. Tell your hubby I said so.

So, SO glad that your mom is okay and on the mend. She needs to wake up to rock those earrings you gifted her (although if she is still groggy I say you can prance around the house in them.) ;-)

Enjoy the day, dear girl! No surprises that you are the damn funny! Going to check it out now!

I have been a lurker but I just had to comment because I am so glad that everything is back. It is amazing how some people can be son kind while others are so ruthless.

I have also had somewhat of a downward spiral towards the end of this year, so here's hoping for a brand new sparkly and happy 2011!

Bossy Betty said...

Yeah!!!! So great to hear some good news after all the trouble you've had. Tina Angel is indeed one to celebrate. I'll be thinking of you and your mama too! Congrats on your kudos!

Ash said...

Yeah Tina!!! Yeah Joann!!

I firmly believe that there is far more good in this world than bad. If that makes me a fellow "Rebecca" so be it, I'm glad to be in such great company. To go through life any other way would be unthinkable.

Come on 2011!!

Hi I'm new to your blog and love it :-) Just remember karma is a bitch...that evil devil will pay a harsh price for what she is doing.

Your Pal from MA said...

Hi! I'm here via Bye, Bye Pie! I am "Your Pal From MA" over there and I see there are quite a number of us faithful BBP readers over here, as well!! How nice!

And, your blog is QUITE adorable and you now have a new faithful reader! I've seen the name of your blog elsewhere and decided to finally stampede over here to see what the hubub was all about!

I must say, I'm glad I did!

Now, on to actual comments: I am similarly Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm and totally believe in the inherent goodness of people. And then someone like your douchebag Teresa Brazell comes along and I get all confused! Like how is that possible? I am a good person, and therefore, badness is not going to come my way, right? So weird when it does.

Anyway, God bless your friend Tina and her selfless act of kindness to you. Teresa will be finding out about our friend KARMA...

Sometimes people really suck. But just when I think the world is gone totally down the drain, a Tina comes along. Whew.

Happy (and, hopefully, peaceful) New Year!

And congrat to you my friend for the well deserved award! You are #1 in my book.

Looking good! Thank you Angel Tina!
Hope your Christmas was good (under the circumstances) and please have a bottle of wine for me on New Year's...nursing means I have to "limit" my alcohol intake...

Also? We are holding you to that Twitter promise. (But I warn you it is a time suck and a half)

Deborah said...

Tina! How marvelous. How AMAZING!

And I am cyber-poking out that other dame's eyes with hot sticks. She is a bad person and will get hers some day.

Sandra said...

OMG Joann, that horrible blog designer fiasco gives me the heebeejeebees. I'm glad all is back to where it should be and I hope it stays that way.

Breathe Gently said...

I am so glad you had your blog fixed, thanks to your angel. I had the same thing happen to me, thank goodness for a friend saving my images for me. I also recommended Teresa to a friend who paid her down payment, got a few token images to query, but then disappeared. No response to emails, no money back refund for not completing the design - just silence. If you could let me know if you or your friend get anywhere with Splendid Sparrow designs, I'd appreciate it. It's ridiculous.

Dawn in Austin said...

So glad for your angel! And hoping there is a flock of angels around both your mothers.

Your new year will rock, of that I am sure!

Erin said...

Oh Joann! I am so sorry this whole debacle even happened, but I'm relieved that your bloggy angel was here to help. I'm just like you---I'm naive and I tend to assume everyone is good. It stinks that this woman took your money and your blog and ran away. Total suckage.

But you're back and Tina rocks and that is really what matters!

Happy happy!

Kate said...

Yea for Tina!

And I'm so happy for you that some good things are happening for you now. I mean, I know good things are happening all the time, but good things right after sucky things are something special...that reminder that yes, things are right with the world.

The Empress said...

Thanks for restoring our faith in humanity, Tina.

And, Joann, who hooked you up with the bamboozler? Was she recommended?

I can't believe she'd do that, with the internet world being so mall and how fast viral news spreads.

What a dummy.

But Yay for Tina! Who is anything but an ordinary hero.

I was just thinking last night, I need a movie review post from Joann.

I love your movie reviews.

You so kick ass at that.

Do you take requests? Like, say,,,would you do...

Amazing! Amazing that anyone can do that kind of horrible crap to people and just start up again to do more horrible crap to new people! Amazing that your Tina Angel did all of that wonderful stuff for you, and during the holidays no less! Amazing that your Hubby has declared blogging/writing time for you and told the family to back off -- if he wasn't already married to your awesomeness, he'd probably have a bunch of Internet broads after him. I think you should head to Starbucks every day anyway. Just think of all the wonderful blogging material you could get with the people watching!
