A Journey's End
Tuesday, February 22, 2011

Oh Captain! My Captain! Our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting . . .
-Oh Captain! My Captain, Walt Whitman-Leaves Of Grass

It always seems surreal when this happens to us.

And it has happened far too many times.

My husband's father died last night, peacefully yet unexpectedly, in his sleep.

Godspeed Bill. Say hello to my dad for me.

I'm not sure when I'll be back, friends.

But I will be back because life begins and ends and there are all the days in between and it is in those days that I will try to find the right words, to capture it all.

Please keep us in our prayers as we journey north to mark the passing of a father, grandfather and husband.

In one of the stars, I shall be living.
In one of them, I shall be laughing.
And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing when you look at the sky at night.
-The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Life is eternal and love is immortal and death is only a horizon; and a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight.-Rossiter Worthington Raymond

Just so sorry, so very sorry. A wee bit stunned and can't think - even though I know that there really are no words. Sending prayers from my neck of the woods and hugs to all. May the Lord give you His grace and His comfort.

I lost a dear friend earlier this month and this was recited as a graveside prayer:

When my sun of life is low,
When the dewey shadows creep,
Say for me before I go,
Now I lay me down to sleep.

Wothing more to doubt or dare,
Nothing more to give or keep,
Say for me the children's prayer,
Now I lay me down to sleep.

Who has learned along life's way,
Be it primrose Path or a stoney steep,
More of wisdom than just to say,
Now I lay me down to sleep

Now, we lay Bill down to sleep,
We pray the Lord, his soul to keep.

Oh Joann, Prayers to you and your husband and the whole family. I'm so sorry for your loss.

When my mom passed away last year we had this poem printed on her prayer cards:

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and the sky come to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says: "There, she is gone!"
"Gone where?"
Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in the mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says, "There, she is gone!" there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout: "Here she comes!"
And that is dying.
Henry Van Dyke

I hope these words bring some small comfort. You are loved.
Jan

Oh Joann... so sorry, my friend, so very sorry.
Find it in your heart to be extra sweet to your husband and to yourself. It's a hard road ahead, as you well know. Find brightness wherever you can. Immerse yourself in love. Remember him with all your heart.

Oh Miss Joann! I am so sorry that I missed this news, I have been a bit MIA on the blogs this week. I am sorry for the loss of your father in law. It sounds like he had a rich and full life and that is the best that any of us can hope for. Know that we are each praying for your peace in this time of sadness. And this is precisely why I always say, "Every day may not be good but there is something good in every day." Find your 'something good' and celebrate it.
Enjoy the day.
